Dr Gaurav Luthra, Vice Chairman & Chief of Cataract & Refractive Surgery at Drishti Eye Institute, Dehradun, has been a pioneer in the latest techniques of Cataract Surgery and Laser Vision Correction, having introduced both to the region 20 years back. His areas of interest are Refractive Surgery, Pediatric & Challenging Cataract Surgery, Premium IOLs and Keratoconus. A Past President of Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society of India (IIRSI) he is currently the Chairman - Academics & Research, Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society of India and a Member of Management Committee, All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) Dr Luthra has been a guest faculty and course instructor for over 15 years at most international meetings including the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Annual Symposium & Congress (ASCRS), the Congress of the European Society of Cataract Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), American Academy, APACRS, World Ophthalmology Congress and Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Dr Gaurav Luthra pioneered Wavefront LASIK to the region in 2002, Phakic Lenses(ICL) in 2006 and SMILE / Contoura vision 6 years back. Drishti Eye Institute and Dr Luthra, in particular, have been largely responsible for bringing Dehradun on the International map of medical tourism, drawing patients from far and wide seeking specialised quality treatment for spectacles removal among others. He has been invited to over 200 live surgery workshops to teach latest Cataract & Refractive surgical techniques around the world and has presented over 175 papers/lectures in International and over 200 papers/ courses in National Conferences. He regularly trains international & local Doctors in Refractive Surgery (LASIK & SMILE) since 2002 besides heading a successful Fellowship program in Refractive Surgery at Drishti. Dr Luthra has been honored by the prestigious IIRSI Gold Medal 2008 & Subodh Agarwal Gold Medal 2013, for exemplary work in Cataract & Refractive surgery. Dr Luthra is also a recipient of Mohan Lal Gold Medal in 2002. A recipient of the ACOIN Gold Medal in 2015, he delivered the Prof. M R Jain Oration at the Annual Conference of Jaipur Ophthalmological Society 2018 and Dr Ravi Kumar Reddy Oration during the second Annual Conference of TSOS 2016 at Hyderabad. He has been awarded the Dr Daljit Singh Gold Medal by the Lt Governor of Delhi, Shri Anil Baijal, at the Annual Conference of IIRSI-2019. Dr Luthra was awarded the coveted AIOS-IJO Gold Award for the year 2021 for their publication “Preferred practice patterns for photorefractive keratectomy surgery”. Dr Luthra is a Founder Member of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences (WCRSVS). He is a Reviewer for several peer reviewed journals and has contributed chapters in several books.
