About

Renato Ambrósio Jr was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 25, 1972. He is the first son of two ophthalmologists: Renato Ambrósio, MD, a pioneer in Refractive Surgery in Brazil in the early 1980s, and the second president of the Brazilian Society of Refractive Surgery, and Vera Martins Ambrósio, MD. Dr. Ambrósio graduated from the Souza Marques School of Medicine in 1995 and obtained the ECFMG (Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) in 1997. He concluded his residency in Ophthalmology at the Instituto de Oftalmologia Tadeu Cvintal (São Paulo) in 1999, a fellowship program on Refractive Surgery and Cornea at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) in October 2002, and the Ph.D. Doctorate in Sciences at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo in May 2004. In 2006, he was elected the President of the Brazilian Society of Administration in Ophthalmology, being in this position until July 2010. From 2012 until 2014, he was the last President of the Brazilian Society of Refractive Surgery before the incorporation with the Brazilian Society of Cataract and Implants to create BRASCRS (the Brazilian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery). He was vice-president of the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (2013-2015) and is the current President of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and of the Refractive Surgery Alliance (RSA; 2023-2024). In 2007, he founded The Rio de Janeiro Corneal Tomography and Biomechanics Study Group and co-founded the BrAIN (Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Networking in Medicine) in 2010. He is an affiliate stricto sensu professor at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and an Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). Professor Ambrósio is a world-class refractive surgeon-scientist. He has over 170 original papers. His primary areas of interest are related to Refractive Surgery, including multimodal imaging, custom laser vision correction, refractive cataract surgery, and therapeutic procedures for keratoconus. He initiated the Violet June Global Keratoconus Awareness Campaign in 2018 and wrote the book “I HAVE KERATOCONUS, NOW WHAT?” to help educate patients and family members. Besides his busy academic appointments, he is at private practices in Rio de Janeiro: Instituto de Olhos Renato Ambrósio and VisareRIO – Refracta Personal Laser. He is a second-dan black-belt Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and an amateur Piano player. He is married to Renata Siqueira, MD (an ophthalmologist) and has two daughters, Giovanna and Rafaella.
